The president isn't trying to eliminate private coverage. He's trying to get them paid more.
Look at Mass. "Universal" Healthcare for an example.
Universal healthcare forced by the government is useless and just going hurt everyone unless it's fully government run.
Then it only hurts the old and those less likely to survive treatments for those who would more likely survive treatments but didn't have the foresight to get healthcare, and those with prexisting conditions from a young age.
