The Elite dropping to $299 is not a "true" price drop just as Sony dropping the 80GB down to the 40GB price is not a "true" price drop. It's the same thing as if the already existing cheaper SKU got an upgrade since the cheaper SKU in both instances was discontinued.
To be a true price drop it would have to drop the price on the lower SKU's as well and the middle SKU would still be around.
