I have to say I agree with you. If Dumbledore was gay then something should have come up in the book itself. Just saying "oh by the way, Dumbledore was gay" just screams of attention seeking.
EDIT: actually, after having read the article itself it appears it came up as an answer to a question. So yeah, just something that never really came up before rather than something she did for attention. Sorry, but I now disagree with you ;)
