I've had the slim PS2 when it first came out and its still working perfectly, never had it overheated. I also have the phat PS2 since like 2001-2002 and that still works perfectly too. So so far Sony's been good and reliable. Im sure you wont have any problem with the slim.
Recommended games: What Squall_Leonhart said, along with Resident Evil 4, DMC series, Onimusha Series, Metal Gear Solid 2&3, those are some of my fav =)
