The slim PS2's are likely to be the most reliable out of the console line, since it is the more refined final iteration of the console. Then again saying that i had my launch 'fat' console for years without any of the 'well known' issues so i guess it is just luck really!
If you get a PS2 then there are a few games you simply have to pick up:
Final Fantasy x
Kingdom Hearts 1&2
Shadow of the Colossus
Ico
to name a few from my own collection that are just awesome!
