I would actually prefer it to release on a handheld. Either DS(Trust me it has enough space) or PSP would be fine. That is if we are only talking about a port. Otherwise, I would like to see a console release.

Are you sure? I'm not sure you can call it a remake if you put it on DS. I mean, the game is well over a 1.2 GB and that's compressed in one file!

Look at the bolded in my post. Also PS1 games had a lot of junk code compared to 3d games of today. Also how was the game compressed? By a homebrew program? I'm sure square enix can compress it more than that. Seeing as there  isn't any limit to how big a ds cart can be as far as I know of with the exception of cost(which is getting cheaper as time goes by) they most likely could make bigger carts if it was an issue. Also since it is DS, things like video quality, and other things that the difference isn't as impacting as it would be on a TV help too. There are plenty of things they can do to make it fit. I just mentioned a few.

Well FF7 is 1.2 GB on PSN and since FF9 is four discs instead of three, I think it's safe to assume that it takes more space with the higher quality graphics, sound, and FMVs.

Of course, but like I said that 1.2gb is meant to run on a TV. You don't need as much quality for the DS or even the PSP for that matter. Just look at PSP games that have much more content and higher quality graphics  yet are the same or even less than what you mentioned. Actually there are even DS games more impressive content-wise than FFIX and fit fine. Then there is the matter of nothing stopping them from making a 512Mb(4096megabit) cart. This is especially when things memory wise get cheaper by the month.

Umm, that's the size of the PSP version as well.

And? The PSP  has enough memory to run it. Why would they need to decrease video quality? To be honest they probably INCREASED the quality for PS3 standards.

Oh and don't get me wrong. If it is a direct port I would love to see it on PSP over DS, because of the bigger screen, but that doesn't mean it is impossible for the ds to run it with the same content.
