I think they can make exceptions in some cases, though, such as WipEout HD.

But I didn't think there was a set limit for point, because disc titles have extremely varied numbers of points.

WipEout HD has the limit of a regular retail game. Sony stated that it has the amount of content as a full size game, but they decided to release it as a download only title. So, it's basically a $60 game in terms of the total points for trophies.

Also, as others have pointed out, DLC can add up to a certain amount of points onto any games, full or PSN titles. I believe there is a limit on those as well, and there might be an overall limit including DLC and the full game, but I'm not sure on that one. (So devs couldn't just release a ton of DLC and make a game have a ton of trophies. Again, I'm not sure on this one.)

I'm not sure about Sony putting a limit to the amount of DLC a game gets, considering the two most prolific DLC heavy games of Burnout Paradise and PAIN.

Not DLC itself, just trophies that come with the DLC. Again, I have no idea if I'm remembering this correctly; it sounds kind of weird, but I figured I'd just throw that out there for someone to either confirm it or correct me.
