Not really.. a lack of competition didn't seem to hurt the PS2, or the NES or even the original Gameboy.
But with more people buying your console, companies have more incentive to pour more resources into development and securing titles as more people would buy it.
I agree that I don't understand the goal of fanboys, but I think your logic isn't right (except for the innovation bit, which was proven with the lack of forward thinking improvements between the PS1, PS2 and PS3 generations beyond graphics and space, until the Wii came to play).
What are they trying to achieve? Superiority, but to the extent that there still exists people to gloat in front of would be my guess. So not total domination, just enough to make themselves feel important. That's my guess, I don't have a real answer.
