Mainly it has to do with the video cards and their power. If a monitor only has a certain max resolution, then somebody might recommend a certain video card rather than a more expensive card because it'll perform well at that resolution for a cheaper price.

Screen size does have something to do with it though. 2560 x 1600 is the max resolution for 30" monitors and you can only get that with those. Simiarly, certain monitor sizes support different max resolutions. For example, it would be kind of weird to get a $500 GTX 295 when you have a 17" LCD monitor that supports a max resolution of 1440x900 when a $100 9800gt would suit you just fine.
