Its a boost to the lifespan of PS3.

Also, they wont have had the tech for a slimline version when PS3 released.

This.

The cost reductions come from die shrinks, motherboard shrinks, pretty much all internals getting shrank and now the exterior (for the Slim).  The shrinking only comes after a mature manufacturing process.  In other words, it would have been a lot harder and taken them a lot longer to produce PS3's if they had wanted to start out with 45nm chips.

So if they would've started out making the slim, then not only would it be time consuming, but it would have a shorter life span? But with the original PS3 models, it would have a longer life span. So here's another question, how many people do you think are going to buy the Slim?

no, what he means is how can you start out on the slim without having time to experiment with technology. Its kinda like saying why didn't they start out with dual core cpu's instead of single cpu's for computers, technology advances over time.
