the PS2 at first had the PS1 hardware onboard (just like the PS3 had the PS2 hw onboard) - with the slim model they introduced software BC for PS1
I didn't say it was "impossible". If anyone can do it it's the company that manufactured the consoles and has complete access to all the architectural details of the hw etc.
But still, the PS1 was inferior to the PS2 in all points - in every spec - while the PS2 isn't compared to the PS3, so that makes things atleast a little bit more difficult.
