In Grandia, the lower right hand corner there is a bar that shows the turn order however it moves in real time. Whenever one of your party members' turn is up the action stops and you can take your time in deciding what action you want to take.

I believe it is a perfect blend of realtime/turn based combat.

How does that differ from the system FF X uses?

FFX if I remember correctly uses ATB (active time battle) where the battle continues while you struggle with the menu to find the exact potion or magic you want to use/cast.

Umm. No. That is FF X-2.

You are correct FFX uses CTB (from FF4). Suikoden should be a good alternative. 5 has a good story and the series does not rely on cut scenes and cinemas enough to make older titles unbearable to playthrough. Suikoden 1 and 2 look amazing on a PSP and passable on my PS3.

PS2 is region locked for both games and DVDs, PS3 is not.
