There are several ways around the HDD problem, for starters they could just say, well newer HDD are not compatible with old consoles and vice verser, and deal with the flack they get for it.
OR, they could have a compartment in the 360 where you can place your HDD and put a cover on. It would have to be underneath as it would look ugly and be a pain.
I'm sure they know what they're doing though.
