Japan's government has been working on making there be a standard Japanese that everyone speaks, but there are still people who use the various dialects. I was kinda amused by some people there who would ask if British English and American English speakers could understand each other. Some people there were kinda surprised when I told them about how English speakers could often be identified by their accents. They knew that there weren't particularly dialects though, so some thought Americans would all sound pretty similar.
And on the OP's topic, I may give it some more consideration after work and post later.
