While there's no argument that piracy is rampant, the real question is how many of them would have translated into actual sales were piracy not a viable option (hint: every downloaded game does NOT equal a lost sale at full retail value; the real number is somewhere in between). It's generally unwise to accept industry arguments for losses in this case; for example, if you accept at face value the RIAA's claim that each act of infringement cost them $150,000 (as stated about five or six years ago), then one month of torrents would be worth more than the GDP of France. Also, pointing to piracy as a causal factor may be highly misleading - is there any chance, for example, that newer games simply suck compared to the older ones?
I'm not taking any side here, for the record, but I do want people to take a more balanced view of the situation into account. It's not as one sided as certain people make it out to be.
