From the sound of it, you wanted to see a movie with a lot of action, big breasted women, and absolutely simple plot with no thinking involved. Sure, those movies are great and I like them too, but that's not Watchment. And just because your uncultured doesn't mean the movie was bad.
The movie was long because it had to do the entire graphic novel in one movie. There are no sequels and working it in parts wouldn't have worked. If you can't sit down for 3 hours then you have a poor man's attention span.
The Comedian and other characters played a specific role in portraying a kind of character. But they all were playing something similar... a superheroe in uniform but a real person in life. Not everyone is going to be this character that is pure justice and good. And even with as much power as they gain they won't always be good characters. That was the main premise of Watchmen. Put superheroes in real life and then see what happens or what if they were real this is what they'd be like. The Comedian was no different. He had a very nihilist view of the world. He understood the world to be evil and corrupted and saw no way to fix it. So have fun with it while you are there because its just a joke. You aren't mean to like him but you can see where he comes from.
To understand the story you have to think. It's an alternate timeline where the Cold War is still raging in the 1980s and tensions are high. As you go along you start unmasking a conspiracy along with learning more and more about the characters. It's really easy to follow as long as you are actually paying attention and following how these characters are interacting and stories being told about them.
And this is where you lost me. One of the best qualities of the movie and novels is character devleopment. It's all about the characters. All about how if superheroes were real and in real life this is what would happen to them. Especially with Dr. Manhattan who actually had super powers. Someone who knows everything and has the world sitting on his hands is going to be different. Even further why save humanity when people don't deserve help. Or Rorschach who's extremist right wing views and moral objectivism drives him to continue to be a vigilante as he can't compromise when evil exists.
The rest I need not comment on.
Personally i loved the movie and the graphic novels. They provide a great story with great characters (in the fashion of comic books) but also give a lot of good themes, messages, and questions to ask among yourself while you are reading or watching. Not only that, but the uniqueness of some of the characters and now they progress in the story is astounding. Truly a great movie and something I could really talk about for awhile.
