Since when have nintendo not been able to keep up with competitors Specs?
The Nes was a big leap over Atari
The Snes a big leap over the Nes and minor over the Megadrive
the N64 was a big leap over the Snes and PS1
Gamecube was a big leap over the N64 and PS2 (well maybe not a big leap over PS2 but an improvement)
Only this Gen and with the DS have they forgone a huge leap like their competitors for controls.
They've proven in the past they can make the most powerful hardware and I have no doubt the next console might be WiiHD but that doesn't mean it will be comparable to this gens 360 and PS3 but comparable to what ever MS and Sony bring out.
IMO they took a punt this gen with their control schemes and decided to keep cost down by duct-taping two GC's together for lack of a better phrase so if it failed they wouldn't be in a Sony shaped hole.
Now it's established they can go all out, and probably will have to, with specs to keep up with the competition.
Like some have said to keep cost down out of necessity Sony's next machine might be two PS3's duct-taped together. Well involve updated and multiple Cells so they can build a Nintendo sized lead.
Like I say it's one of the ways I could see things going next gen and is based on personal opinion
