PS2 acctually has one of the lowest failure rates, lower then gamecube and xbox.

As far as I know, the PS2 is the only console ever to lose a class action lawsuit due to its enormous failure rate early on in its lifecycle.

DRE on Ps2 was a huge deal. It wasn't until half way through the gen that Ps2 reduced the failure rate iirc. I went through about 4 Ps2 before having my last one for 3 years. Sadly mine broke before the lawsuit went in so I had to cough up 150$ a couple of times for them to repair it.
