Remember: Mario 64 and Zelda OoT worked because Nintendo took the essence of what made the 2D games so great, put it into 3D, and hid/reduced the burdens that 3D gaming. Both games are well-known for letting you explore and not dealing with a clumsy camera.
Sonic, on the other hand, forgot about speed and made you wander around a city for a while. Then added several non-speedy characters to the mix. And the unholiest camera ever to ever exist.
There are several other series that didn't survive the 3D jump: Contra (the PS1 Contras...ohmygod no) Road Rash, Toa Jam and Earl (remember the XBox sequel? Anyone?) Final Fight etc. Many new develeopers don't understand what made the old ones so great.
So any modern remake I hear about is taken with a grain of salt.
There is no such thing as a console war. This is the first step to game design.
