Console gaming is not doing hot right now and developers/publishers are having a hard time making a profit, so releasing the next generation consoles soon would make matters worse. They need to keep a stable flow and not aggravate research and development spendings.
The downside of delaying the entry of next generation though is that the Console gaming market's growth will be severely slowed down, making it even less relevant.
