It does sound like they were joking, but at this point the PS3 Slim is all but confirmed. The obvious would be a pre-holiday release to give the console a jump in sales not seen since the $399 40GB SKU back in 2007.
Most likely we'll see inventory clearing discounts on the current 80GB SKU from $349 to $299 with a likely price of $399 for the Slim upon release. Once inventory on the 80GB SKU has been cleared, I would expect to see the Slim drop to the 80GB inventory clearing price at $349 to $299.
Depending on how much inventory of the current PS3 is in distribution channels, it's likely we'll be seeing a lower priced Slim right around Black Friday.
