If you use that scare tactic method of boosting sales you are only going to get short temporary boosts and you'll have to continually reintroduce SKUs (a very expensive process) with even less features to try and keep people buying the ones with good features. |
If they can rinse and repeat this formula then it will work.
Consoles have long lifetimes so they probably think they can afford to piss off customers now with the assurance that they probably won't care in 5 years. Right now they need to move units moreso than present an honest PR image. If they can score cheap shots, they're going to take them at this point I think.
