Because people fear it. Sorta like how all of Nintendo's Wii games "don't count" (unless they fail to pass an imaginary number barrier, in which case they become the shining beacon of anti-Wii arguments).
Personally I don't understand the vicious denial. When I finally got around to playing Pokemon I was surprised at how much more of a Japanese RPG it is than most of the stuff coming out now.
