It doesn't matter whether you chip it or change the ECU, since the product itself is the engine control program.

See, now you are confusing me, first you talk about changing the ECU, then you talk about chipping it as if that were somehow relevant to the MS argument. The fact of the matter is, this has nothing to do with the computer market since they are both very different animals.

If you must use the ECU argument, As long as you put in an aftermarket ECU with OEM values, you can use any replacement ECU without having to worry about voiding the warranty. If you chip it, (some chips actually don't void the warranty either) then, yes, you do void the warranty. That is mainly due to the fact that most chips are user tuned. and if you don't know what you are doing, it is really easy to destroy your engine.
