No they entered the console market to stop Sony from dominating the living room.  

so... they are going to stop Nintendo now? Sony didn't really need MS to end their domination.

Yeah but who would have known what was gonna happen.  Most people (back in the PS1/PS2 time) thought that Sony would continue to Dominate this gen like they used to.  Not too many people could have predicted that the Wii was gonna be the one to dominate.

And no console to date has dominated the console market even remotly as close as Sony did during the PS1/PS2 timeline.
