Essentially with each step forward in the series, it has gotten easier to level and less necessary to grind. In fact, in Disgaea 3 one of the character even jokes about whether or not the group should grind before facing a boss.
I would have pointed out grinding as a flaw in the original and necessary at times in the second game, but Disgaea 3 really doesn't need it as long as you're consistent with the characters you use.
