Is your internet persona/"avatar" the true you or a mask?

The avatar only represents me into what I like... Anime, Death Note and Goth Lolita style. About how I act, well I'm more shy in real life and I don't speak up my mind as much. Beside that, I'm pretty much the same. I don't see why I'd be a jerk online or act completely different. It makes no sense to me.
