I'm not an audiophile (being that years of drumming has killed my hearing) but how much better than CD audio can you really hear? Didn't DVD-A and SACD fail because consumers didn't see the value in higher than CD quality audio?

I expect that you may need extra space to have 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound but do you really need that much space?

Yes we do because technology is all about timing. SACD failed because Sony released it to early. If they would have waited another year or two the format might have been successful. The space needed for 7.1 surround sound is quite large and with prices for a 7.1 sound system lowering and becoming more and more affordable the more of the general population will want support for it.

So people are trading 192kbs mp3 tracks (which even to my deaf ears are far worse than CD audio) but secretly are dreaming about high quality audio? Are you kidding me? CD audio represented a great improvment in the quality of audio and yet people abandoned it in favour of an easier to use (more portable) format.

Man, I swear that Videophiles/Audiophiles must just assume that the rest of the world cares as much about this stuff as they do regardless of the evidence against that assumption ...
