Rolwing, Tolkien, Robin Hobb, Susanna Clarke, Orson Welles, Frank Herbert, Jane Austen, Christopher Marlowe, Sergei Lukyanenko and many many more.

I can't name my all time favourite as it really depends on what mood I'm in.

 

EDIT, also throw in the graphic novelists Alan Moore and Frank Miller.
