One of the biggest hurdles most people need to overcome is the tendency to liken anime to cartoons. Anime really needs to overcome this connotation because an anime like Great Teacher Onizuka has more in common with House M.D. than Sponge Bob. People can't see that though. They just look at the fact that GTO and Sponge Bob are both animated and think they're closer to compare. It really is a shame that one of the biggest challenges for anime is overcoming its own medium.
As a side note, America has produced the best animated films in the world courtesy of Disney. Aladdin, Hercules, Robin Hood, Little Mermaid, Tarzan, Mulan, and more are amazing films that people of ages young and old can enjoy and are stilling enjoying decades after their creation.
