thats mamoru oshii's style, and the main reason the sky crawlers didn't get the oscar nomination, eventhough the movie is as beautiful as movies get, a main plot and various subplots are presented and not resolved until the very end(barely resolved that is) while the movie drags on with no specific goal in mind for the most part, a same case is seing in the jin-roh script made by oshii. anyways ghost in the shell ain't as good as some people say it is, maybe thats the reason why its only popular on the west, while in japan they actually had to completely that out the name "ghost in the shell"

I tend to prefer a strong and clear narrative with a good sense of pacing.  Works such as Kiki's Delivery Service, Toki wo kakeru shoujo, and Read or Die OVA are more interesting to me than others such as Ghost in the Shell, Hoshi no Koe, and the like.

i also like tokikake alot and mostly movies and to a degree series with straight forward plots, mainly because i don't have to go read a wikipedia article to understand what the fuck happened, but movies with a bizarre or alternative narrative are also very fun to watch, just because they have those shocking "oh noes he is ghost" m.night shamalayn moments.
