Not in that sense. It was just presented as a game, but the soldiers recieved orders and obeyed them.

Really?  I was always under the impression that the ships were in fact being directly controlled and manipulated.  Maybe I should reread them.

Nope, there were people in the ships. That's why Ender wasn't told- they didn't want him to know that thousands of human lives were in his hands, and they didn't want to stop him from making rash decisions to win the battle.
