Off Topic:
I think Naruto (as a character) truly has matured, especially in the lastest Chapters of the manga. That in effect has made him one of my favortie characters.
On topic:
I can't really say he is bland as a character, he just going through the phase as being the typical "shonen hero". But underneath I think there is alot of ground to cover. Such as the death of his mother and how it changed his outlook on live. His situation as a shinigami screwing over the law to save his friends, his thirst for power to fight the opposition to protect his friends.
All this isn't original, but I think it well done in Ichigo's case as a character.
This will convince anyone to watch Bleach.
