I do think that a slim version of the PS3, if this is indeed *possible* will have a big impact in Japan, as they are a very space-conscious culture.
Also, it should reduce production cost. I don't know what sony is trying to do, but reducing components, and size intuitively seems like a cheaper way to go....but we'll see eh.
