The A-button is on the edge side of the racket, not the face side.

As I said though, Federer has wrapped his thumb further around the grip, if you don't need to use the A-button in the game then you could do the same (so if you hold it normally with thumb on a-button, then move your thumb to the left and around to the side of the remote)

Ah I see what you mean.  Doesn't seem natural to me though.  I mean the way he is holding it seems very natural but he is connecting to the ball with the biggest part of the appliance in his hand - the face of the racket.  However, with the Wii remote if I hold it that way I have to connect to the imaginary ball with the thinnest part of the appliance in my hand - the sides of the remote with no buttons. Imagine you were thrown a real ball towards you and you had to hit it with the wii remote or with a TV remote control.  Which part of the Wii remote would you naturally try to strike the ball with?  Clearly it would either be the part with the A button or the part with the B button (or on a tv remote the part with all the buttons or the underside where you put the batteries).  This is because it is the biggest part so you are more likely to hit the ball that way than if you tried to hit with the sides of the remote. 

I think maybe I might have to buy a gimmick racket attachment (so that the biggest part of the appliance in my hand is the sides of the remote) for it to feel natural for me to swing in the way the game wants me to.   

The Wii remote is not that different in width and depth... only 0.5cm. I don't find a problem with assuming which is the face of the racket because it only acts as a handle (which on tennis rackets are octagonal) I just hold the Wii remote as it is meant to be held in all games, then swing as if playing real tennis. (In Wii sports tennis anyway... but as you should use the same grip in grand slam too)

Also... I would make sure you look at any plastic add on you get, because some of them get it wrong too (something I noticed when the plastic POS first came out)

What about golf? I mean you are "more likely to hit" the ball with the face of the remote in that too, but surely you don't assume it to be the club face.
