I remember doing a little research on this subject. The appearance of a unicorn in the King James Version is the result of the mistranslation of the Jewish word re'em. For everyone's benefit, I found a website that expounds on this issue.

In regards to Jonah, I think it also was a mistranslation as famousringo stated. With the numerous transliterations and translations of the Biblical texts, that would be the likely explanation. Nevertheless, I do believe God can miraculously intervene in people's lives.
