I think it is an excellent idea! I can choose to use any object to act as a motion controller and use another hand to hold the Sixaxis controller and press the buttons, or I can use the wand as the motion controller with buttons. Or I can even use my Sixaxis as the motion controller with buttons!
And I think the concept is similar to the 'wand' announced in E3. Though the controllers used are different, in terms of software development, they should be using more or less the same library. The game developers only need to code to track the position of the object. And it should be a built-in function of PS3 to provide the position of the object no matter what the object is. And the PS3 will store the library of the recognized objects.
Of course, the games may need to provide options for what object to use in the game or provide feature to scan new objects and manage objects.
The question is, when using any object, is it as precise as using the LED wand? If so, I think their techniques are advanced from big LED ball to small LED ball (in E3) to now no need to be an object with light.
