GOP success was partly due to the fact that they managed to lash together an alliance of whites particularly southern whites and rural whites, theocons and neocons, problem for them is their constituency is getting old and whites are shrinking as a percentage of the electorate. Minorities and the young are going Democrat, the GOP is absolutely moronic to go against immigration like they are doing, hispanics are the fastest growing minority and in a few decades, whites will no longer be the majority.
