I'm not gonna go on an analysis here, since there are people who haven't play the game and i don't want to spoil anything, but all I can say is that it is far from generic.

The basic plots of FF games are generic but plot is a barebones version of the story.  What makes the stories in the FF games good are the characters and their struggles.

I agree. Most RPGs have derivative plot, but what (usually) makes an RPG good (IMHO) are the characters.
