it depends on the genre though i'm more into singleplayer and offline co-op/multiplayer than online. i prefer online multiplayer(not co-op) in shooters since on splitscreen you kinda now where everyone else is. not in everyone cause many of them are strictly singleplayer experience like Condemned 2 or Turok.i prefer online in racing sims as well simply because it wouldn't work good on one console and tv screen/monitor. i hate online and any kind of offline in rpgs and jrpgs - it's about singleplayer and nothing else matters(though there are games like Monster Hunter that are build from the ground for co-op).
