The thing about FF is it is an amazing series. I just think it has gotten too pretentious for its own good. Its all about graphics and overblown stories. Yes, the older ones were some of the best games ever made but it peaked at VI, VII has steadily gone downhill with a few bright spots IMO...
SMT has some amazing games too.. (all Personas, Nocturne, DDS 1&2 etc.) They have much different atmospheres and themes than just about any other RPG series and are far more mature than most. Also, in the Persona games you really get attached to the characters. Gameplay wise, it has random dungeons like a roguelike which some people don't like but you really have to know exactly what demons to use to win and the conversations were cool in Persona 2. I think it just stands out because it is much different than anything else.
