Well, for me there's 1 conclusive proof of its falsehood: look at the left picture. The disk, if you were to lay the system flat, would need to be put in upside down. Given that it would be counter-intuitive to do this (and extra strain on the moving parts), a system of that design would be too prone to errors and breaking.
