I fear for the perpetrators safety, the safety of their loved ones, and the safety of his property. Many outside these online communities do not fully appreciate the seriousness of these acts to the members of these communities. You say it is a game, and thus write it off. However for many of them it is their life. They have a great deal of emotional investment, and have dedicated hundreds if not thousands of hours to obtain these virtual items. So yes it can be deadly serious.
I once knew a player that actually tried to set another player on fire over an online disagreement. You would think that would rattle at least one of them. Yet there they were both back at it a few months later. Fist fights, busting up cars, even killing of pets is not unheard of. This guy stole from a lot of people who are not likely to just dismiss this as a game. A lot of these players can be deadly serious. You wrong them virtually, and they can come after you literally.
Shit I probably still have half a dozen serious beatings sworn out on my ass. I am just glad those fucks do not live near me, or know where I live. I ran into a game nemesis once in real life, and I swear I could fucking feel the hate. I was waiting for her to take a swing at me, and I was playing within the rules. I couldn't imagine the hell that would have rained down on me had I swindled her out of a thousand dollars worth of virtual money, and the serious ones know how to calculate the true monetary value of their virtual assets down to the dollar.
