I know this is only anecdotal evidence but I know a ton of people that would jump on the ps3 bandwagon if it had full ps2 backwards compatibility in it. A lot of them were like me in that they were xbox only owners last gen and missed out on the fantastic ps2 library. It would just be so much more convenient to get a back compat ps3 than one that's on the shelf right now and a ps2.
