I said that a few pages ago. This voting is going for personal preferences, and not for RPG's that actually made history in the RPG genre. Elder Scrolls was one of the first RPG's to introduce a massive open world in the RPG genre, Diablo almost launched the MMORPG genre, along with Ultima, Dragon Quest is the Original JRPG (and almost all DQ are better than FF games, the exception being FFVI, FFVII and FFXII IMO), but people are just voting to the most popular/played at the moment. Right now, the only three RPG series that made an important contribution to the genre that are still standing are FF (which put JRPG in the mainstream), Shin Megami Tensei (launched the whole RPG/Dating sims genre, which was only popular in japan and mainly in Dating sims/hentai games) and Fire Emblem (Launched the SRPG sub-genre).

I just don't agree with your whole sales evaluation, sales doesn't equal quality in games. The first ES games didn't sell that much, just because Morrowind and Oblivion sold a few million that doesn't automatically put it as better games than SMT or any other game. ES is a great series because it was the first which offered you an open world and the ability to be almost everything that you wanted.

I agree that sales should never be a deciding factor, but ranking a tightly Japanese-focused title that sold to a relatively small number of RPG players doesn't make any sense.  It probably didn't have as much impact on the genre as you might want to believe.

As far as open world environment, there were titles in the 80's that broke that ground.
