How far have you gotten in the game? Those two characters may seem like that when you first get them, but they are definitely not as one-dimentional and generic as you make them out to be. Taking advantage of the Party Talk feature is a good way to further the development of the characters, and goes hand in hand with their story development.
Also, you learn about 1/3 through the game that Dhoulmagus is not the main villain.
