What game genres are on the verge of extinction?

When I read Side-scrolling, I thought of horizontal Shmups like Darius / Gradius / R-Type (Blast Works for Wii is excellent, btw - It's pretty much Tumiki Fighters with knobs on).

Also, besides games like Contra 4 / ReBirth and Metal Slug 8, there's not much to repesent the Run & Gun genre these days.

I don't really know how the genre is called. But finding newly developed games (like ikaruga) is kind of hard for me... I only see remakes.

Well just put it like that, the games that are on the verge on extinction are games that are not on discs...
