I've seen no substantive evidence to suggest the 60 GB machines are less reliable. Sony stopped making them for cost-cutting reasons -- the extra internal hardware to read PS2 games made the system more expensive, and most customers didn't feel backwards compatibility was important, given that PS2s are plentiful and supercheap.

But if you're worried about your machine breaking down, get a warranty from the retailer or vendor.

Aside form the numerous 60GB models that have YLODed, it is a known fact that they are the most troublesome, reguardless of what fanboys try to say. The other models seem much more solid.
