Someone who is famous for their talent can recover from negative points in their career because their next big album, movie, book, or whatever can be good enough to attract new attention; and after several successful projects and a long period without "offending" people most people will forgive them for their mistakes.

Usually this long period of time is post-death.  Many notable artists hit the peaks of their respestive popularities after they passed.  Picasso's paintings will live on long after the memory of him being a complete jerk at that one party disappears.
