Well, according to Nintendo the Gamecube was futureproof too and was going to have a lifespan of 8 years so we should be seeing a follow-up to the Gamecube in 2009 ...
Wait, what do you mean they already released a system?
You mean a company would make statements based on optimistic expectations for sales in order to encourage people to spend a lot of money up front to buy their system?
